Randomised controlled trial of Avocado in people with overweight and obesity

Daily consumption of one fresh Hass avocado daily (140g) reduced abdominal adiposity (belly fat) among females but had no effects on insulin production or peripheral insulin sensitivity.

In a group of overweight adults, consumption of one Hass avocado a day (175g for men and 140g for women) resulted in a decrease in visceral fat, but in women only. There was no change between groups in men. There were no changes in insulin resistance, insulin sensitivity or insulin production.

Practice Tips

  • Avocados need not be avoided in people who are overweight
  • Including a small avocado a day in the diet may have metabolic benefits, particularly in women
